Canada is a vast country with many wonderful fishing opportunities, but we are concerntrating on the opportunities presented by the some 400 salmon rvers located on the east side of Canada. While there are many classic blue ribbon rivers, the Miramichi river system is as productive, in terms of total catch weight, as all the others put togethor. This makes the Miramichi river system in New Brunswick a classic atlantic salmon fishing destination.

Fishing on the Miramichi is fishing on the most productive of the river systems, but to catch larger atlantic salmon, then other river systems such as the Restigouche, the Grand Cascapedia, and the Matapedia should be considered. Different regulations apply to different rivers systems in Canada, but on the larger rivers, fly fishing is done with a guide from a 26foot long canoe called a Gaspe. (The angler stands mid canoe and casts). This is a fairly common form of fishing in these larger salmon rivers, but on the Miramichi a canoe is only used to move from pool to pool and fly fishing is done by wading.

When to Go
The season runs from June with the peak of the season in late June or early July. Although fishing conditions through the summer and into fall can be quite excellent. The end of the season varies from river system to river system.
